About this tool
This free online tool combines two essential utilities for clinical researchers, graduate students, and biostatisticians: a CONSORT 2010 flow diagram generator and a statistical power analysis calculator (G*Power style). The CONSORT module produces publication-ready flow charts for randomized controlled trials (RCTs), quasi-experimental studies, surveys, and observational designs with 1 to 6 arms. The power module computes required sample size or achieved power for the most common statistical tests used in biomedical and behavioural research.
Features
- CONSORT 2010 compliant layout — Enrollment, Allocation, Follow-Up and Analysis sections with standard boxes and flow direction.
- 1 to 6 study arms — Single-arm surveys or observational studies through to multi-arm RCTs.
- Drag-and-drop repositioning — Move any box; arrows reconnect automatically with right-angle (elbow) paths.
- Click-to-edit any box — Fine-tune text on any standard or custom box without losing layout.
- Custom intermediate steps — Insert unlimited extra rows (single or per-arm) between any two standard sections.
- Section toggles — Turn Randomization, Allocation, Follow-Up or Analysis on/off for non-RCT designs.
- Multi-language UI — 9 languages including English, Türkçe, Deutsch, Français, Español, Русский, 中文, العربية, हिन्दी.
- Export — Download SVG (vector, scalable) or PNG (3× resolution), or print directly.
- Power / sample size analysis — t-tests (independent and paired), one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, chi-square.
How to use the CONSORT flow diagram generator
- Choose your language and number of arms.
- Toggle the sections you need (Randomization, Allocation, Follow-Up, Analysis).
- Fill in enrollment numbers and per-arm data (size, follow-up losses, analysed n, exclusion notes).
- Optionally add custom intermediate steps for design-specific boxes (e.g., "Received intervention", "Baseline measurement", "Per-protocol analysis").
- Click Generate. Drag any box to refine the layout; click a box to edit its text.
- Export as SVG or PNG for manuscripts, presentations or theses.
Power analysis (G*Power) guide
Statistical power (1 − β) is the probability that a study will detect an effect of a given size, if that effect truly exists. Most journals and ethics committees expect an a priori power calculation to justify sample size. This tool implements closed-form and normal-approximation formulas for the most common tests:
- Independent-samples t-test — effect size Cohen's d. Small = 0.2, Medium = 0.5, Large = 0.8.
- Paired / one-sample t-test — effect size Cohen's dz.
- One-way ANOVA — effect size Cohen's f. Small = 0.10, Medium = 0.25, Large = 0.40.
- Pearson correlation — effect size = expected r. Small = 0.10, Medium = 0.30, Large = 0.50.
- Chi-square — effect size Cohen's w. Small = 0.10, Medium = 0.30, Large = 0.50.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is a CONSORT flow diagram?
A CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) flow diagram is a standardized figure summarizing how participants move through the phases of a clinical trial: enrollment, allocation, follow-up, and analysis. It is mandated by most biomedical journals following the CONSORT 2010 Statement.
Which CONSORT version does this tool follow?
The layout follows the CONSORT 2010 Statement template (parallel-group randomized trials), with optional flexibility for other designs via section toggles and custom rows.
Can I use this for a single-arm observational or survey study?
Yes. Set arms to 1 and optionally disable the Randomization / Allocation sections. The tool will produce a clean single-column flow diagram suitable for surveys, observational cohorts, or single-arm pilots.
How accurate is the power analysis calculator?
The calculator uses well-established closed-form approximations (normal-theory formulas, Fisher's z for correlations, Cohen's lambda tables for F and chi-square). For most common scenarios (power 0.70–0.95, α = 0.01–0.10), results match G*Power within ±1–2 participants. For unusual configurations or mission-critical decisions, cross-check with G*Power or a full statistical package.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The entire tool is a single HTML file — no server, no accounts, no tracking or analytics. All diagram and power calculations run in your own browser. The only external request is a web-font stylesheet (Google Fonts) loaded for typography; offline, the page simply falls back to system fonts and every function still works. Save the file and open it anywhere.
Is it free?
Yes, free for academic, educational, and research use. Created and maintained by Dr. Doğukan KURÇ.
